MEDICAL NOTES FOR TRAVEL TO RUSSIA, CHINA, MONGOLIA, AND TIBET

Things you need from the doctor, and not in glass bottles either:-

-one course of erithromycin for lung infections.
-three courses of anti-bacterial antibiotics for those stomach bugs. Check that you can take them with the above; you may have to!
-Diamox for altitude; two weeks worth.
-two courses of Tinadazole for giardia.
-broad spectrum antibiotic for emergencies.
-jab for Hepatitis A AND B. In the UK they usually say that only A is necessary, but current WHO advice is that both are needed! Best done with a Havrix combined jab.
- jabs for rabies, meningitis, tetanus, diptheria.

Things you can get from the pharmacy, not in metal tubes if possible (they break and leak):-

-high dosage vitamin C, for colds and for when you first ascend to altitude; about two weeks worth is OK for the latter.
-Multivitamins.
-antiseptic cream.
-athletes foot powder/cream.
-plasters (one long roll is best).
-aspirins.
-chlorine sterilisation tablets for usual use, which can be used for long periods if necessary, plus iodine for Tibet (for Giardia prevention). Water filters are bulky, and mine broke anyway on the way to Everest!

Finally, drink loads of water in Tibet. The locals average 3-4 litres a day; copy them.
Back to frames- if you're not in them already!
